SHOOTING IN MOUNTAINS

Safe Practice Code Urged

The executive of the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand had decided to ask the Forest Service and the Deerstalkers' Association to collaborate in drawing up a code of safe practice for firearms in the bush, said the annual report of the president of the federation (Dr. R. A Rodda), which was presented to the federation’s annual meeting on Saturday. The federation had also decided to ask the New Zealand Safety Council whether publicity could be directed against accidents of this kind The Deerstalkers' Association and the Junior Chambers were sponsoring a Dominionwide campaign on the safe handling of firearms, and it was thought that this would assist the federation’s action in the matter, said the report. Rope Testing

Arrangements had been made for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research to conduct tests on old and new nylon ropes and on new terylene ropes. It was hoped the tests would give a good indication of the expected life of a New Zealand climbing rope, said the report. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Gotz) had made a grant of £5OO towards the publication of a new edition of the book “Safety in the Mountains." The grant was. however, subject to the condition that the federation reserve 5000 copies for distribution to youth organisations. This requirement was likely to use a large part of the grant. As a result of the efforts of two member clubs, supported by the federation, radios were to be installed in several mountain huts. Specially designed radio sets were being manufactured and it was hoped that they would be installed this year, said the report.
