Ballet To Set New Record
“The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, May 26. The highest priced theatrical entertainment in New Zealand history will be the Leningrad Ballet's nine-per-formance season in Wellington and Auckland in July. Tickets will cost a recordbreaking five guineas each for mezzanine, lounge and front stalls, and three guineas each for back stalls and grand circle. The Leningrad Ballet will appear on July 21. 22 and 24. The Leningrad Ballet is the best known Russian ballet company apart from the Bolshoi Ballet of Moscow. A full company of 55 dancers are coming from Russia by chartered aircraft.
They will present five performances in Auckland, after the Wellington season. It will be the first visit to New Zealand of a full ballet company from Russia. They will be accompanied by the 57-piece New Zealand National Orchestra. The first two performances in Wellington will comprise Tchaikovsky's “Swan Lake” (second scene) Ponchielli's “Gioconda" and Karaevs "Seven Beauties” (third act). The second two performances comprise Minkus’ “Panchita," Tchaikovsky’s "Swan Lake” (third scene), and “Divertissements.’’
