Cardigan Bay Sold To North Island

*Th.e Press' Special Service

INVERCARGILL, May 26. Cardigan Bay, one of Southland's top pacers and a winner of five of his 12 starts as a three and four-year-old has been sold to the North Island at one of the highest prices paid for a Southland pacer. Cardigan Bay has been raced by his breeder, Mr A. Todd, of Mataura, and trained by D Todd. He is to join the Onehunga team of P Wolfenden, who recently secured Motif from the Todd stable. Both Hal Tryax four-year-olds, Motif and Cardigan Bay will race in the same interests. Cardigan Bay has been lightly raced by D. Todd As a three-year-old last term when he had Blue Prince in his stable at the same age. Cardigan Bay had eight starts, winning two and being once placed. As a four-year-old this term he has had only four starts. He was beaten by Va Vite at his first appearance but won at his three subsequent starts—at Roxburgh. Wyndham. and Forbury Park. From 12 starts he has won five times and been twice placed for £1445 15s in stakes.

The price paid for Cardigan Bay brings him into the class of other high-priced Southland purchases in

Gentry and Blue Prince, both of which were secured by the Auckland owner. Mr H S. Barry, for whom they have been most successful. Like Blue Prince, Cardigan Bay is one of the first crop sired by the American horse Hal Tryax, whose three-year-olds this season have taken all before them. Thej' have included the season’s top juvenile pacer King Hal (winner of £3lBO including the Oamaru Stakes, the Riccarton Stakes. North Island Challenge Stakes, and Great Northern Derby). Student Prince 'New Zealand Derby). Robin Dundee (New Zealand Oaks). Jolly Hal (Wellington Challenge Stakes), Halyard, Lyn Robyn, and others. An earlier high-priced Hal Tryax colt was Heels Ahead, which changed hands for 3000gns in Australia. Cardigan Bay is out of a fine race mare in Colwyn Bay. which gave good service for the Todd stable in a restricted career, taking a twomile record of 4min 25sec. She was by Josedale Dictator from Pleasure Bay, a Quite Sure mare from a fine trotter in Helen's Bay. by Guy Parrish. There is a strong trotting influence in this pedigree, but another capable pacer belonging to it was Scotch Girl <4min 25 l-ssec). Cardigan Bay. which has won three races on end as a four-year-old this term, has matched the record of his dam Colwyn Bay, which also won three on end as a four-year-old. Both were trained and driven by D Todd.
