GEOPHYSICIST ARRIVES
Week’s Study In New Zealand
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 18. Professor V. V. Beloussov, president of the International Union of Geodosy and Geophysics, and general reporter for the U.N.E.S.C.O. seismological missions, has arrived in Auckland for a weeks’ study of New Zealand progress in his field. In Wellington he will meet Mr G. A. Eiby, of the seismological observatory, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, a member of the U.N.E.S.C.O. mission. He will continue with Mr Eiby to the Philippines, where they will join the other scientists of the mission. Professor Beloussov will be shown the Wairakei geothermal power project, the Dominion Physical Laboratory at Gracefield, the Geological Survey headquarters and the Wellington Emergency Precautions Scheme. He will speak with the Minister in charge of Scientific and Industrial Research, the director of the New Zealand Standards Institute. Mr G. Lawrence, and the Mayor of Wellington (Mr F. J. Kitts). He said that he was extremely interested in the volcanic and geological structure of New Zealand and its earthquake history. (
