Mr Williams wrote: “I do wish that all of you in the United States, from the President down, would cease the present ridiculous attempt to extend the doctrine of 'keeping up with the Joneses’ into the sphere of international science. , “Your habit of dividing your resources between several competing groups may have caused you to be two years behind Russia, but what is all the anxiety and shame about? “Britain is perhaps five or six years behind. We in New Zealand are about 50 years behind in the space race, but somehow we manage to sleep in peace and can look most people in the face. For goodness’ sake relax.”
