MUSIC COURSE FOR TEACHERS

Study Of Several Instruments

Thirteen primary school teachers in Christchurch have recently completed a six-week course in music.

All the teachers received instruction in playing several instruments. They were taught the elements of violin playing, guitar playing, the use of several percussion instruments including autoharps and chime bars, and musical appreciation. Mr H. W. Findlay, the Department of Education’s senior inspector of schools in Canterbury and Westland, explaining the course, said the idea was not to produce proficient players in the time but to produce teachers who could guide children beginning to learn.

The teachers at the course attended a rehearsal of the choristers of Christchurch Cathedral and were addressed by the cathedral organist, Mr C. Foster Browne.

Mr R. Walden Mills, who is the adviser in school music to the Education Department for the whole of New Zealand, Mr K. Newson, senior lecturer in music at Christchurch Teachers* College, Mr R. Perks and Mr Findlay, gave instruction. Several other speakers also took part of the course.
