The Census

Sir, —In the recentlyconducted census, under the heading “Religion,” I wrote “Christian,” as, indeed, my religion is. However, lam informed that the person officially delegated to collect this paper deleted my wording and substituted “C. of E.” Am I not correct in my assumption that this is a denomination of a religion and not a religion in itself, and that he was at fault in his substitution? Furthermore, as I had previously signed this paper as a personal factual record, had he authority to change this information in my absence?— Yours, etc., ASHBURTON GORGE. April 23. 1961.

[The Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker) replies: “Census sub-enumera-tors were instructed to accept any answer on the religion question even if it appeared to be facetious. I am unable to understand why any alteration to the original entry was made as stated, but if 'Ashburton Gorge' will get in touch with me I will investigate and see if the reported change was actually made, anj), if so, why.”]
