CATTLE SALE AT TINWALD

Calves Predominate In Yarding

Entries in all sections of the open cattle sale held at Tinwald yesterday met with a satisfactory sale, and a good clearance was made. It was one of the largest cattle sales held in the Tinwald yards for several years, about 1250 head of cattle coming forward.

More than half the yarding was comprised of calves, although there was a substantial entry of adult cattle. Generally, prices were easier than at the cattle sale held early in April, although compared with the Methven sale last week, rates were firm and in many cases better.

Top price for steer calves was £3l 10s, paid for a pen of 18 Aberdeen Angus calves, sold on account of Mr M. M. Curd of Lauriston. Hereford steer calves reached £2B 15s. paid for a pen of the Mount Possession Run Company’s draft.

With a list of nine Shorthorn heifer calves. Messrs W. I. Lili and Son. of Montalto, took the top heifer calf price of £3l 10s. Another good pen ot the same calves was sold for £3O 5s on account of Messrs H. M. and K. A. Verrol, Winchmore. Mr Curd’s Aberdeen Angus heifer calves sold very well, one pen bringing £2B 10s. Prices for heifer calves, in the main, were easier on the last Tinwald eale, and the steers were on a par. but prices for both were £2 to £3 firmer on the Methven sale. Adult Cattle Good adult cattle, both steers and cows met a good sale, the top price of £4O 15s being paid for a pen of seven Hereford steers on account of Isla Farm, Invercargill. Pena of mixed sex cattle and odd beasts sold well. However, the big proportion of the adult section was made up of Herefords. and the better sorts of steers were in fat and forward condition. In the breeding cows, wellbred pens of polled Hereford young cows came forward, and sold well up to late rates. But generally, cows appeared to be easier on the last sale by about £2 to £3. A feature of the sale was the annual drafts of two stations, the Mount Possession Run Company, Ltd., and Proutings. Mesopotamia, Ltd. Both drafts met with a good sale, and the demand for the top lines of each, was keen. The Mount Possession cattle had been on the road for about two days, but were still in good condition, and showing particularly good colour Throughout the day, a large gallery followed the sale, and keen competition was shown in the calves section and the early part of the adult beasts. Towards the end the gallery dispersed, the sale lagged skghtly, with gales becoming herder to make. But the last few pens drew some keen bidding and realised good prices.
