Mr Hayman Minister Of Agriculture

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 1. Mr T. L. Hayman, member of Parliament for Waitaki and Postmaster-General and Minister in charge of the Government Printing and Stationery Department, will be the new Minister of Agriealtnre, taking over the portfolio of the late Mr W. H. Gillespie, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) announced tonight. After the announcement Mr Holyoake was asked whether a new minister would be appointed to bring the total strength of the Cabinet back to 16. Mr Holyoake replied that no appointment would be made. Mr Hayman’s portfolio of Postmaster-General will be taken over by the Minister of Broadcasting (Mt Kinsella) and the Minister of Housing (Mr Rae) will become also the Minister in charge of the Government Printing and Stationery Department.

Other changes announced by the Prime Minister in the course of a reallocation of portfolios are that Mr Gerard will add Marine to his existing portfolios— Forests and Minister in charge of the Valuation Department—and Mr Eyre will

become Minister in charge of Tourist and Health Resorts while remaining Minister of Defence and Minister in charge of Police. Farming Knowledge “I am sure the farming community and the public generally will welcome the appointment of Mr Hayman,” said the Prime Minister. “A lifetime spent in farming pursuits has given him a wide practical knowledge of the industry. “As a, farmer and an agricultural contractor he knows at first hand the problems of the man on the land and his fine service on farming organisations has made him thoroughly familiar with the

collective thinking of farmers’ representatives. “Mr Hayman's public work has included service on various local bodies, sb that he brings to this new office a comprehensive knowledge of administration over, a wide field of community effort. “It is indeed fortunate that the Government has available a practical farmer with such a good background of public service to replace Mr Gillespie.” Local Bodies Mr Hayman was born at Studholme in South Canterbury in 1904 and educated at the Waimate High School, where he was dux in 1921. He has been engaged in agri-

cultural ’ contracting and farming ever since. He has served on a number of local bodies and farmers’ organisations and has been a member of the Waimate School Board, and the South Canterbury Electric Power Board. He has served as chairman of the Waimate Potato Growers' Association, chairman of the potato section, and vice-chairman of the agricultural section of the South Canterbury Federated Farmers. He was first elected to Parliament for Oamaru in 1949 and on the abolition of this seat in 1957 became member for Waitaki.
