MEETING AFTER MASSACRE
Exact Site Sought At Waikanae 2 Press Assoctationi WELLINGTON, April 27. The Historic Places Trust expects to locate the precise site at Waikanae where Maori warrior met pakeha in one of the most delicate crises of British settlement. This was soon after the Wairau massacre. The meeting was between Governor Fitzroy and two Maori chiefs who had taken part in the Wairau affair, Te Rauparaha and Rangihaeata. The possibility of pinpointing the meeting place presented itself when the remains of an old church were discovered at Waikanae recently, the chairman of the Wellington branch (Mr S. Northcote Bade) said today. His committee felt the present road in the vicinity should be altered to form a square on thi historic spot to commemorate not only the church, but also the public meeting place and the Governor’s historic decision to accept the Maori story on land troubles which led up to the massacre. It was a controversial decision. but it undoubtedly averted war.
