ALGERIAN VOTE
Warning By France (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Coppripht) PARIS, April 12. President de Gaulle said last night that France will stop all aid to Algeria if the people there vote for a break with France. He said that if a future self-determination vote decided against links with France, then France would seek to recall her nationals and send back the estimated 500,000 Algerians working in metropolitan France. General de Gaulle was giving a rare press conference at the Elysee Palace four days after peace talks were to have started with the Algerian insurgent leaders. He did not go into reasons given by the nationalists for refusing to attend the talks, but he did make a gesture of appeasement towards the insurgents. He said Mohammed Ben Bella and other Insurgent leaders in French hands would receive more liberal treatment if talks were effectively started. They would be freed and returned to Morocco if the insurgents agreed to a ceasefire.
It was understood from sources close to the Government that this constituted General de Gaulle’s last offer to negotiate with the insurgent leaders.
