School In Shifts ?
Sir.—Towards the close of a drab summer, we have bathed in a couple of fine days and a brilliant suggestion that if the schools worked in shifts, capital expenditure and staffing could be halved. This idea needs a big following because sauce for the gander might include the fact that, with a spot of organising (which many schools could provide' perhaps half of our existing retail establishments could sell all that the public require. What a grand saving in capital expenditure and labour force! There would be plenty of sites for parking areas and town halls, labour for our farms, more teachers trained to reduce the size of classes, a real cut in total business overhead, a huge saving in capital expenditure. The cost of living would be substantially reduced. Indeed, sir. if there were two newspapers in the one city, they could even orint on the Same press.— Yours, etc., HALF WIT. March 21. 1961. tit is by no means uncommon in other countries for rival newspapers to use the same press.—Ed.. “The Press."!
