Mauapouri

Sir, —I have just been reading again some half-dozen articles extolling the beauty of New Zealand, written for the “Christian Science Monitor” by its travel editor, Leavitt Morris, during his tour of these islands last year after the P.A.T.A. conference in Christchurch. I doubt whether any region on earth has been described in more enthusiastic terms than those he used in connexion with our Southern Alps and lakes. “Scenic jewel of the world.” “nature’s greatest masterpiece,” are but two examples. Mr Morris has just recently received the Pacific travel writing award for 1960, at Honolulu, at a confeience of 300 delegates from 26 nations, held to plan the' Pacific tourist industry. In the face of such a boost to our country's attractions, can we afford to permit the proposed act of vandalism to the fairest of all our lakes? There is time yet to adopt an alternative advised by experts. Manapouri must not die! Wake up New Zealand!—Yours, etc., A.H.G. March 20. 1961.
