TROTTING Aquaplane In Solid Run At New Brighton

A solid run over two miles by Aquaplane and a smart effort over the same distance by Ballista and Falsehood were the features of a quiet morning; at New’ Brighton yesterday. Most of the horses w r ere let off with solid rather than fast work. The trials were run very wide out on a track which was slow early after a heavy dew. The track improved a little during the morning, but remained on the easy side.

Aquaplane went away on his own from the two-mile post and he joined Ln with Lucky Tryax and the maiden. Cressbrook, at the end of half a mile. A. J. Bourne sent Aquaplane to the front before he had covered six furlcogs and he pulled him to the outside fence. He was shaded a little near the six furlongs by Lucky Tryax. which was worked halfway across the track. Aquaplane and Lucky Tryax finished together, about a length in front of Cressbrook. Aquaplane took 4min 40 4-ssec for the two miles, his last half mile in lmin 6 3-ssec, and his last quarter lin 33 4-.ssec, a smart effort Iconsidering the extra ground he covered and the slow state of the track. He looks a fit horse for his New Brighton Cup engagement on Saturday. He has had three wins and three placings from his la-st eight starts and in spite of his handicap of 24 yards, he will be a place prospect on Saturday. Lucky Tryax. a candidate for the Burwood Handicap on Saturday, blew hard after his work and he should benefit from the run. He looks well.

Cressbrook has shown considerable promise, but he has been a little disappointing in his racing. He could soon make amends for recent defeats. Gildirect and Zany worked oyer two miles when the track was at its heaviest in 4min 40 2-ssec. the last halfmile in lmin 8 2-ssec. and the last quarter in 33sec. Both horses worked keenly and they look to have taken no harm from their recent racing. Both Zany and Gildirect will start from 36 yards in the New Brighton Cup on Saturday. If the pace is solid their chances of success will not be bright from their awkward marks. Ballista's Trial Ballista, a candidate for the Esplanade Handicap on Saturday, made the pace ano was joined by Falsehood over the last furlong of tneir run over two miles in 4min 35 3-ssec, the last half-mile in lmin 6 3-ssec. and the last quarter .in 33 l-ssec. Balliteta has failed in two starts since he won a sprint at Hutt Park on February 25. He looks well and will only need to begin smoothly to take a prominent part in the

finish of Saturday’s race, which has drawn a particularly open field. Falsehood Is not engaged at the New Brighton meeting, but he will probably be on hand for the Wigram Handicap at the Canterbury Park meeting a week later. He has not raced since he was successful in the Geraldine Cup at his only start this season. He looks to have trained on satisfactorily since that race. Mecca Star made the pace for Dither and ProfitaJjle over one mile and a half in 3min 33 2-ssec, the last halfmile in lmin 03-ssec. and the last quarter in 33 l-ssec. Dither, which broke with less than half a mile to run in his race last Saturday, is a candidate for the Marine Handicap this week. Vanese Works Well Vanese, a good tihird to Napoleon Hanover and Johnny Thunder in the Rangiora Handicap at the Cheviot meeting, was let off with an easy run over one mile and a half in company with Super Cloud. They recorded 3min 313-ssec, taking lmin 6 3-ssec for their final 'half-mile, and 341-ssec for the last quarter. Vanese will be a prospect in tihe McKenna Handicap on Saturday. Super Cloud gave a sound display of trotting. He will, be set a difficult task from 48 yards in the Waimairi Handicap on Saturday, but the first time he is more favourably placed in the handicaps, he could race prominently, Fiorita made the pace and finished under a hold alongside Welburn and Parados, with a gap to Huntingdon at the end of an easy mile and a half in 3min 39 3-ssec. They took lmin 9 2-ssec for the final half-mile, sprinting the last quarter in 32 l-ssec. Florita looks a fit mare and even from 24 yards, she will have prospects in the Burwood Handicap, the second leg of Saturday’s double. Welburn and Parados also look well. Laika was much too good for a maiden pacer in G Cameron's team at the end of an easy mile and a half in 3m in 39 4-ssec. She sprinted hter last half-mile in lmin 7 4-ssec. and her last quarter in 33 4-ssec. She is a candidate for the McKenna Handicap on Saturday.
