OAMARU HOTELS
142 Majority For Trust (N2. Press Association) DUNEDIN, March 21. Trust control of hotels in Oamaru has been carried by a final majority of 142 votes. The provisional majority of 283 was reduced to 142 by a recount and by special votes. The final figures announced tonight by the chief returning officer (Mr R. H. R. Dixon) were:— Trust control .. 4207 Private enterprise .. 4065 Informal .. .. 15 Total .. .. 8287 Of the 480 special votes in the Oamaru section of the licensing district 249 favoured private enterprise and 231 trust control. It is not known whether the National Council of the Licensed Trade, which fought the campaign on behalf of private enterprise, will seek a magisterial recount, but after the provisional result was announced, Mr J. Thompson, assistant to the council's director, said that it was not likely a recount would be sought unless the majority was reduced to well under 100.
