DOCTORATE OF PHILOSOPHY
Mr M. McCaskill, Of Christchurch (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, March 19. A doctorate of philosophy has been conferred on Mr M. McCaskill, a senior lecturer in the geography department of the University of Canterbury. The doctorate was awarded by the University of New Zealand after the completion of Mr McCaskill’s thesis entitled “A Historical Geography of Westland.” Mr McCaskill was born in Te Aroha and later lived in Timaru and Dunedin before he attended Christchurch Boys’ High School. From the University of Canterbury he graduated with first-class honours in geography. His thesis for his master’s degree was “Coromandel Peninsula and the Thames Valley.’’ Mr McCaskill was appointed an assistant lecturer in the Canterbury University department of geographyafter he had taken his degree. In 1954 and 1955 Mr McCaskill was on the staff of the geography department of the University College of the University of London. He returned to New Zealand to continue work with the University of Canterbury. He is secretary of the Canterbury branch of the Geographical Society of New Zealand and .an assistant editor of the society’s journal, “New Zealand Geographer.” Mr McCaskiil expects to take his refresher leave in 1962 and intends to work in Australia.
