Racing TULLOCH BEATEN

Third Defeat In Succession (N.Z.P. A.•Reuter) MELBOURNE. March 19. Tulloch (even money) was beaten into third place by Dhaulagiri (5 to 2) and Lord (9 to 2) in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington yesterday. It was the third successive defeat of Tulloch. Some racegoers abused the jockey. George Moore. and Tulloch. The majority sympathetically clapped and cheered the old champion. The crowd got a shock when Moore dismounted after the horses passed the winning post, and it was thought Tulloch had broken down. Tulloch trotted along the track, led by Moore, and then the jockey jumped back into the saddle. Dhaulagiri, which won. and Lord, second, were on the way back to scale, but Tulloch was last in. led by the clerk of the course. As Moore sat on Tulloch waiting to dismount, he told the trainer. Tommy Smith: “The last, I think. Tommy.” Asked why he dismounted after passing the post. Moore said: ”1 thought he was sore in the near foreleg.” An attendant paraded Tulloch round as Smith examined him. and said the champion had a cut on his off coronet. Later, a Sydney veterinary surgeon, Mr P. J. Sykes, inspected the horse in his stall and told Smith that but for the cut he was sound. Dhaulagiri beat Lord by half a length, with Tulloch half a neck away, third. The run was so convincing that the trainer. Brian Courtney. said that Dhaulagiri wlil definitely go to Sydney for the Invitation Stakes next Saturday. Lord’s failure to keep a straight course made the finish easier for Dhaulagiri. Dhaulagiri’s rider. Geoff Lane, has shown remarkably good tactics in each of the three races in which he has met Tulloch and Lord this season. The field went away yesterday with Lord leading Dhaulagiri, and Tulloch outside in third place. This time Moore was alert to the possibility of being forced wider still, and nine furlongs from the finish he moved round Dhaulagiri to within half a length of Lord. leaving Dhaulagiri to come round him If Lane elected to. Lane, however. was not tempted. He stayed next to the rails, and was rewarded when Lord, under pressure, moved away and gave him a “dream run” on the inside. The New Zealand gelding.
