TROTTING NOTIFY’S GOOD STAYING RUN

Cheviot Cup Success At New Brighton Notify recorded what was probably one of his best staying performances to win the Cheviot Cup at the Cheviot Trotting < dub’s summer meeting at New Brighton on Saturday. During the race he virtually had to make two runs and responded brilliantly each time. The first of those was about a mile from home when he came from near the tail of the field and was forced to race four w ide through the straight to work up to a trailing position. The other was fairly late in the last furlong when he eventually managed to work out from a pocket on the inner.

The Cheviot Cup, which was the main event and first leg of the double, marked Notify’s first winning run since May of last year but he has not been extensively raced this season and had recorded two sound placings from his seven earlier starts.

Although he had to give away starts of up to 48 yards to 16 rivals there was confident support for Mr N. V. Bee’s U. Scott gelding which was having his second race from the Yaldhurst stable of N. L. Berkett. Notify was 4he Z'3 favourite for a win-and-place and also second choice with doubles bettors Tn a total double pool of £15.619 IQs he carried 7776 5s tickets. Napoleon Hanover improved a very sound record •for his Ashburton ownertrainer. Mr H. L Dobbs, when he out-ran 18 rivals ■over 12 furlongs in the Bangiora Handicap, the second leg of the double. A earlier Napoleon Hanover had been successful in the corresponding leg of the on-course double at Washdyke. D. J. Townley drove Nanoleon Hanover from the trailing position into the lead outside the last furlong and he drew out to win decisively from Johnny Thunder. The Notify-Napoleon Hanover combination paid £55 18s 6d for £l. This was shared by the holders of 923 5s tickets of whish 359 were held on the course.

The racing was held on a firm track and the weather was fine. There was a good attendance. On - course investments amounted to £43,184 10s, including £5527 on the double, compared with £40.536 10s last year when the meeting was held at Rangiora. Cup Running The chance of victory for Notify did not look bright when he could not work clear from the trailing position a furlong from the end of the Cheviot Cup. but once the gap came closer to home he took it determinedly and won going away by a length and a half from Resolution. Commonwealth. Terry Gowan and Lady Fair all broke at the start, and Spring Jinks went ahead in the lead for the first tw’o and a half furlongs. O. M. Quinlan took Antonius, which was second without a trail. Into the lead before the end of three. After a mile he led by a length from Spring Jinks on the inner of Thunderbolt. Young Betty, Somerset Rose and Jimmy Grattan (three wide) shared the third line then, and Notify was making a big run from the back four wide alongside them. Resolution and Irish Wit were equal fourth ahead of Fernleaf and Cele. Six and a half furlongs out Young Betty broke, and as she drifted back through the field

checked Cele and Dusky Bay. Commonwea.’th ran. into Cele and lost his driver, F. G. Holmes. N. L. Berkett eased Notify into the trailing position behind Antonius starting the last half-mile, and Resolution ran up to second equal as they began the run around the home turn. Fernleaf was three wide alongside these, afid Jimmy Grattan, Calumite. Thunderbolt and Zetland were closest of the others. Antonius started to shorten stride inside the last furlong, and Resolution worked into the lead for a short time. But once clear Notify had the stronger finish and beat him decisively. Resolution lasted by a nose for second from Thunderbolt, and Jimmy Grattan was threequarters of a length back fourth. There was a length and a half then to Antonius, three lengths to Calumite. five to Irish Wit. and half a length to Zetland. Second Leg Napolen Hanover brought his record to two wins in succession when he outran 18 rivals in the Rangiora Handicap, the second leg of the double. D. J. Townley had Napoleon Hanover trailing behind the pacemaker from the start. He challenged and mastered Enrich early in the run home and worked beyond challenging distance of the others at the furlong. Johnny Thunder, which came from the fifth line, did best of them, but he was two lengths from Napoleon Hanover at the finish. Vanese, the 17th favourite of 18. outfinished the win favourite. Loyal Brigade, for third. She had shared the same line as Johnny Thunder on the home turn, where Loyal Brigade was three wide alongside the trailing horses. Vanese was two lengths behind Johnny Thunder and three ahead of Loyal Brigade. There was half a length then to the weakening pacemaker, Enrich, a length to Snuffbox, which had weakened from tfie third line, and a length and a half to Navua. which had shared the fourth line with Spangled Princess to the straight. Spangled Princess, in a small gap. headed the others. King’s Red lost his driver soon after the start when his sulky wheels became locked with those of Terako Queen. Inquiries At Brighton Sally Chief’s racing manners were the subject of an inquiry’ after the second division of the Trial Handicap at New Brighton on Saturday. After evidence had been heard it was decided to declare Sally’s Chief ineligible to start at a totalisator meeting until June 7. D. C. Watts, the driver of Silvester, was asked why the horse ran so wide in the Parnassus Handicap. Watts said when he pulled Silvester out quickly to avoid a breaking horse the prong of the bit got in Silvester’s mouth and he was unable to steer him. Young Betty broke and ran out with five furlongs to go in the Cheviot Cup. The stipendiary stewards’ report said Young Betty pushed Cele on to Commonwealth. As a result. F. G. Holmes. Commonwealth’s driver, was tipped from the sulky. After the running of the Hurunui Handicap an inquiry was held into the barrier manners of Young Betty which swung around at the start. Dusky Bay ran into Young Betty and her driver was dislodged from the sulky. It was decided to declare Young Betty ineligible to race again at a totalisator meeting until June 7.
