Studio And Bellarook Win Double At Oamaru

-The Press" Special Service OAMARU, March 19. Studio, from the Riccarton stable of K. J. Thomson, scored a narrow win from the favourite, Personify, in the Oamaru Cup after making all the pace. This event was the first leg of the Oamaru Jockey Club’s double on Saturday. Ihe Gore candidate, Bellarook, won the second leg, the Stewards’ Handicap. The combination paid £3B 9s for £l. It was Studio’s first success in open company but he has proted a good investment for his Christchurch owner, Mr M. M. Hibbard. He was ridden by the stable apprentice, K. Reggett.

Bellarook recorded an impressive performance to run the seven furlongs in Imin 24 3-ssec. He was untested in the run home. Page Boy wilted under top-weight of 9-6 after disputing the lead to the home turn. In a total doubles pool of £14.175. including £11.755 5s off course. Personify was a firm favourite with 15,413 5s tickets. Studio carried 5279 tickets and 1218 of these were reinvested on Bellarook. The favourite was Blonde Sprite with 1524 tickets. Page Boy carried 828 and Underbid 536. Oamaru Cup Studio was one of the first out in the Oamaru Cup, and running to the mile led Personify and Attribute, ahead of Gaytana. Matauwhi, Aquinas and Keep Time almost in line. There was little change running to the half-mile. Studio had half a length on Personify at the home turn, where Osman. Attribute. Gaytana, Aquinas and Matauwhi were handiest of the remainder. Personify made a game effort to head the pacemaker and failed by only a nose. These two had the finish to themselves. Kastanea. which had only Shoal behind him at the half-mile, put in a big run for third three lengths back, with length intervals to Gaytana. Attribute. Matauwhi and Aquinas ahead of Navarone. which lost three lengths at the start. The second favourite, Osman, faded to ninth ahead of Shoal and Keep Time was last. Run of Race Bellarook had the run of the race in the Stewards’ Handicap. He raced alongside Stradbroke behind Page Boy and Hopeful in the early stages. He followed the leaders into the straight, and when Page Boy ran wide he came through on the inside to be clear running to the furlong. He continued a strong gallop to win by two lengths and a half. Hopeful did best of the remainder. holding off the fast finishing Underbid by a length and a half. Underbid, along with Olympic Flame, was slow away. Fire Bar. which also came home fast, was a nose awav fourth. Blonde Sprite, which failed to run on. was a length and a half back fifth ahead of Stradbroke. Olympic Flame. Page Boy. Desert Chief. Compensate and Haytime last. Led All Way Yasmin added to an attractive record for the season when she led all the way to win the Parkside Handicap, but she had to

be ridden out to hold the fastfinlshing Kent to win by a nose It was her third win in suecession and her fourth in her last five starts. Yasmin turned for home three lengths clear of English Prince, with Candida. Glancing Kent and Madame Curie close behind Kent dashed through to chase the pacemaker and pushed her to a narrow decision. There was a length to English Prince and half a length to Madame Curie, which held the fast finishing Alloa by a head for fourth place. Air View was next ahead of Needles. Close Finish Persuasive cleared hack class when she beat the Wingatui candidate. Mighty Smart, afte these two had fought out a desperate finish in the Redcastlc Handicap. It was Persuasive s thi*-d win in succession Mighty Smart headed Persuasive inside the furlong, but Persuasive fought bac-k to take the decision by a head. Andalusia finished strongly a length back for third, shading Desperation by a neck. Taitumu was beaten off five lengths back ahead of Sailorman. Royal Crest, the favourite. Tremble. Corrieonzo. Haughty Lady, Legal Game and Relation fading to last. High-weight Win Ocean Roll scored a clearcut win in the Autumn Highweight. She ran clear a mile from home and won without being tested by two lengths and a half. The hot favourite. Rhythm Rein, drifted at the start and had only Pilot’Dancer behind him at the finish. Rhythm Rein carried almost half the win pool with 1067 tickets out of a total of 2501. The next best supported was Indian Ocean, with 482 tickets. Ocean Roll was two lengths clear of Ocean Melody turning for home, and she never appeared in danger of being caught. Wbiohau was third a length away, with Indian Ocean three lengths and a haU back fourth Lightning Boy was next, ahead of Paper Clip. Pot Luck, Rhythm Rein, and Pilot Dancer last. Surrend Surrend. after being handily placed in the Windsor Handicap. outstayed Phil’s Choice to win the distance event for hacks by three-quarters of a length. Surrend still had Gaza. Phil’s Choice and Treasure Mine in front of her at the home turn. She was followed by Herbs, and at the furlong there was little between Phil’s Choice, Surrend, and Herbs.

Kintail Loch made up a lot of ground for fourth two lengths back Treasure Mine was next ahead of Alonzo Lass. Breaker. Sunair Surhine. Balance, Ella, Gaza, and Ginger Mac fading to last Favourite Unlucky Pinnacle Stream caused an upset in the Weston Handicap when he dashed clear early in the run home to outclass h.s opponents, winning by three lengths from the unlucky favourite.
