UNEMPLOYED IN N.Z.

“Solid Core” Of 150 And “Misfits” (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 19. The present ’’solid core” of unemployed in New Zealand was about 150, said the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand). He was commenting on the number of 266 unemployed at the end of last month, compared with almost 9000 recorded job vacancies. Of the 266 unemployed, 110 were fully fit for employment and they were a “turnover’* group who had finished jobs for any one of many reasons, such as seasonal work ending or change of locality. The 156 left were unemployable either because ol physical or mental disabilities or employable in only a limited field. The unemployables invariably included a small proportion of the “work-shy and misfits” who presented a problem of their own. The “solid core’’ would remain fairly constant at 150 even if job vacancies were 10 times as great, said Mr Shand. Finding work for them was not impossible, but it was usually a slow process.
