HIGH SCHOOL BOARDS

Debate on Rangiora Appointment An attempt by Mr F. T. Ager to “bow out” of the Rangiora High School Board was thwarted by his fellow members of the Canterbury Education Board on Friday. When the Rangiora board reported its recent reconstitution with one Education Board representative instead of two, Mr Ager nominated Mr R. H. Bowron, a Rangiora solicitor, and tabled the nominee’s written consent. Mr R. W. Sansom said the Education Board should be directly represented on outside bodies wherever a member was available. Members constantly complained about the board’s influence being whittled away: but in this case it was letting direct representation go by default. Mr Ager said that w r ith the new constitution of the Rangiora board and his own length of service he thought it an appropriate time to bow out. He still held that view but was in the hands of the board. Opposition to the principle that the board must always have direct representation was expressed by Mr D. L. Waghorn. Education Board service involved a lot of work on the board’s own business yet most members were expected also to be representatives on about two high school boards each. “You just can’t do justice to the lot,” he said. Mr R. K. Milne and others said that as Mr Ager was the present chairman of the Rangiora board they thought local people would appreciate his continued guidance on the changeover. With no seconder for Mr Bowron, Mr Ager was reappointed. Appointments to other high school boards were made as follow’s:— Avonside Girls’ High School. Mr C. S. Thompson; Christchurch Boys’ High School, Mr R. K. Milne; Christchurch Girls’ High School, Mrs R. R. Beauchamp: Christchurch West High School, Mr D. L. Waghorn; Cashmere High School, Mr R. R. Holland (Burnside), who were recently appointed to the newly-established boards, will continue for a further term.
