CELEBRATIONS AT HANMER

50 th Anniversary Of Club Conditions were ideal for the Simes Memorial Cup and Bascand Cup competitions, played at the Hanmer Springs golf course on Saturday in conjunction with the fiftieth anniversary celebrations of the Hanmer Springs Club. The greens were in almost perfect condition and some excellent golf was seen by the large number of visitors and members. Winners of the Simes Cup were H. M. Elliott and Mrs R. W. Smart, whose net score over the 36 holes was 131. Last year’s winners, E. Ashton and Mrs K. Foulkes (Hanmer), were again competing but finished well down the list. Runners-up were J. Garner and Mrs A. Cowlishaw with a net 135. In the Bascand Cup competition, the winners were F. Williamson and Mrs Williamson (Russley) with a gross score of 155. The pair also won the cup last year. L. A. Watson and Mrs Watson were second with 156. A total of 68 pairs entered for the mixed foursomes. Players came from Kaikoura to Timaru. but the majority were from Christchurch and Hanmer Scores were:— Simes Cup.—H. M Elliott and Mrs R. W. Smart. 131; J. Garner and Mrs A. Cowlishaw. 135. Thomson, had a runaway win in the New South Wales open golf championship at the Australian Club. Kensington, yesterday. Thomson finished with a nine-under-par 279 for the 72 holes. He finished seven strokes ahead of his nearest rival, the British open champion. K. Nagle, who had 286. Both players had shared the lead on 210 after the third round yesterday morning.
