Television

Sir, —As New Zealand may have commercial television I would like to mention one little-known aspect of the television situation iii England. As soon as the Second World War finished, cruelty to children began to drop, as might have been expected

with the decline in psychological tension, and from 1946

to 1956 it dropped by 17 per cent Then,’ early in 1956. against the advice of social workers, psychiatrists, the teaching profession, and the church, commercial television was introduced, and cruelty to children, instead of continuing to decline, suddenly began to rise sharply, and has been doing so ever since. It will be interesting to see if the same phenomenon is observed in New Zealand. The rate of increase in England is now about 5 per cent, a year, and has been so for four years.—Yours, etc., R. B. GODWARD. York. England, Feb. 14, 1961,
