Death Duties

Sir.—The two letters this morning by W. B. Bray and “Citizen” respectively, represent two viewpoints which will probably be repeated in these columns. The first was reasoned and well-informed on what is. after all. a very technical subject; the second was merely an embittered attempt at sarcasm by somebody who believes that those of better intelligence, abilities, and powers of application than himself should not be allowed to enjoy profits proportionate to their labours. Let us supnose, in the case of those who adopt the latter line, that one of them should win a considerable fortune by the lucky purchase of a lottery ticket, and meets an untimely end before it is satisfactorily squandered. Would it be unfair for the State to deprive his sorrowing family of part of an inheritance accumulated by such foresight and hard work?—Yours, etc,, CARACTACUS. February 20, 1961.
