New Zealand-Made Goods
Sir, —I, too, bought shoes from a city store which disintegrated within a few weeks. I, too. had an unsatisfactory reply to my complaint. "New Zealand made” is now another name for shoddinessr—expensive shoddiness. This applies especially to wearing apparel, children's clothes, and confectionery Taste, design, and packaging are third-rate. The fault lies with the public in accepting such low standards. Jerrybuilding, bad pavements, terrible urban roads, lack of sewerage, are shocking conditions in a welfare state. Councils in England can be sued for injuries arising out of faulty roads and pavements New Zealand will have to do better. The old bleat. “We’ve only been here 100 years,” and •She’ll be right.” Apathy and bad management will not help in the battle for survival in this highly competitive world. An active consumers’ association could deal with badly manufactured goods.—Yours, G. BOWMAN. February's, 1961.
