The Congo
Sir, —Russia releases a torrent of abuse of unprecedented viciousness and hate, mobs sack and destroy Belgian embassies, demonstrators riot at the United Nations, and Mr Hammarskjold is labelled a “murderer," all without the slightest shred of proof that Belgium is responsible for Lumumba’s death, or that Mr Hammarskjojd aided and abetted this crime. It seems that Russia is privileged to issue base calumnies, unsupported by any evidence whatsoever, to utter serious accusations against personal and national integrity, again without evidence, and to let her mobs destroy foreign embassies on any pretext, however slim. Russia has exploited the issue beyond anybody’s worst fears, and has stirred up enough emotionalism and hatred to force the world to the brink of an abyss of war and destruction—Yours, etc., A.M. February 17. 1961.
