Sportsman’s Notebook N.Z. OLYMPIC FINN TITLES AT PORT

A New Zealand contest for Olympic Finn Class yachts will be held on Lyttelton Harbour at Easter. Arrangements had been concluded and the contest, the first of its kind to be held in the South Island, would have the largest fleet of the class ever on the water at once in any part of the Dominion, the secretary of the Canterbury Finn Owners’ Association (Mr W. Beere. of Christchurch) said yesterday. Olympic representatives taking part will include Ralph Roberts, of Auckland, and P. G. Mander. of Christchurch. A strong Auckland contingent of between eight and 12 skippers is expected to participate. Some of the yachtsmen, including one from New Plymouth, intend to buy Finns in Christchurch before the championship events. Christchurch now has as many of the 14ft lOin. singlesailed Finns, if not more than. Auckland. Visitors will have to pay about £l5O for. a near-new craft; second-hand boats will go from £9O to £lOO. The contest will be sailed over seven races, with skippers being given the right to drop their worst performances. Weighing of boats will take place on the morning of Good Friday. March 31, and the first race will be held that afternoon with two races each of the following three days. Finns from the Waimakariri reported to be starters in the contest will be boats sailed by A. Association from the Canterbury club premises at Erskine Point. y * * « Swimmer Disqualified The Australian Olympic backstroke representative, Julian Carroll, was disqualified for an incorrect turn in the Australian swimming championship heats at Brisbane recently. Officials ruled that Carroll did not touch correctly for his turn at the 50 metres mark in the 100 metres backstroke race. Carroll who was extremely disappointed at the decision admitted that he missed the touch, with his hand during his turn but maintained that he pushed his hand out again and made the touch. The New South Wales team manager, Mr S. Aldritt, protested against the decision but his protest was dismissed. ® st: * Tenuis Teams’ Losses Two senior men’s tennis teams at least in the Christchurch competitions will suffer from the loss of a key player for the later rounds which will be played later in the season than usual because so many days were Idst through rain. Blunt, who plays second for Opawa. will go to Auckland University to study architecture. University will have a compensatory gain in some measure for the prominent Nelson player, D. "Snow” Rochford. the well known and highly competent West Coast swimming coach, added another New Zealand champion to his list of successful competitors when Joan Ray, a member of the Greymouth club won the junior girls’ title at the New Zealand swimming championships at Tauranga recently. Mr Rochford has coached two other New Zealand champions in the last few years, Donna Nolan, and M. Manderson. Caretaker of the Greymouth Municipal baths, Mr Rochford is an extremely conscientious and able coach and is held in high regard by swimmers on the West Coast.
