Buoyant Fine Wool Ewe Sale At Amberley Fair

Fine wool ewes of an classes met an excellent sale when the annual round of ewe fain in North Canterbury began yesterday with the Amberley southern fair. Values were often 20s and more better than at the same fair last year, with the medium class entries showing the most marked appreciation.

Mid and North Canterbury buyers took the complete entry at values ranging up to 86s for two-tooths, 69s for four-year-old ewes and 56s for five-year-old ewes.

The older ewes, and in particular the four-year class, met a specially strong sale aqd looked relatively dearer alongside the younger ewes.

The ewee which come forward at thia fair have a high reputation as good shifters and buyers come to Amberley from widely scattered parts of the province each year. It was the opinion of those who have attended the fair for many years that the sheep this year have seldom been bettered. The older ewes were a particularly good lot with pen after pen of excellent even sheep carrying a useful covering of wool and in excellent condition. The abundance of feed this season ensured that low condition sheep were a comparative rarity. Among the younger ewes there were a few smaller type ewes but these also were in much better condition than in the recent drought seasons. The entry was smaller than last year by about 3000 head at 22,124 head including 7867 two-tooths. 14,137 older ewes and 120 ewe lambs. Buying Points Rangiora, Darfield and Rakaia districts were among the main buying centres but sheep also went north to Cheviot and Gulverden and south to Weedons, Bumham and Lincoln districts, with even the West Coast represented in the buying list. The sale opened out quietly for two-tooths with pi-ices in the 50s to 68s range, but for the class of sheep offering these liqes were upwards of 20s dearer than last year and it was a charactertistic of the two-tooth sale and the sale in general that the medium and average class of ewe very often showed the most marked lift on last year’s values. Later as the sale moved on to the top class of sheep prices moved into the 80s bracket and 80s or more was paid 15 times, with the top price of 88s being shared by the entries of D. W. J. Gould (Glenmark) and E. A. Foster and Sons (Glenmore). The top two-tooths looked to appreciate by about 8s to 13s on the sale a year ago with the medium class up by around 15s to 20s and in cases even more. For a selection of 20 lines sold yesterday the average was 735, which was about 13s better than for 17 pens of comparable sheep sold last year. The top class of two-tooth ewe sold from 79s to 86s. with good at 72s to 78s. average at 64s to 69s and others at 51s to 60s. Gathered Momentum In the early stages of the adult ewe sale values did not look unreasonable compared with late rates, but -the sale gained momentum as it progressed and with good class four-year-old ewes frequently topping the 60s mark and coming close to 70s the market looked dear indeed and older ewes looked to be selling particularly well in relation to two-tooths. Ten sales of four-year-old ewes were made at more than

60s and for 15 sales the average was better than 575, or nearly 19s in advance of last year’s average for 14 lines. In individual cases sales were made at prices higher by 10s to about 245. The pick of the four-year-old ewes realised from 60s to 695, with good at 52s to 58s and average to 44s to 495. Only about one sale of this class of ewe was made under 40s. In the five-year-old section prices showed a similar appreciation on last year for a more limited selection. With the best makjng from 50s to 56s with four pens at 50s or better, and good ranging from 41s to 47s and others from 29s to 355. values over a selection of eight pens were about 18s higher than last year,. Here again individual margins over last year’s sale varied from a modest few shillings to more than 20s. Top Prices Two-tooths sold to 86s paid for 65 from D. W. J. Gould (Glenmark) and 161 from E. A. Foster and Sons (Glenmore). R. D. Gould (Marlow) reached to 84s for 70. with a further 140 selling at 81s. and his total entry of 504 averaging just short of 775. D. C. Gardiner and Son )(Dovedale) also sold up to 84s, with 66 at that price and another 132 at 80s. Their average for 264 was 795. E. L. Hiatt (Limestone Hills) had two sales of pens of 70 at 836. and for 205 his average was 80s 9d. D. and R. D. Gould (Mount Cass) had sales of 90 and 66 at 80s and 81s respectively, and for 223 they recorded an average of 79s 6d. Other vendors who made the 80s mark were W. L. and J. L. Doak (Cattle Peaks) with 140, A. A. Thomson (Manahune) with 69. W. Acton-Adams 'Tipapa) with 69, and R. C. Overton (Raumati) with 89. The H. McLean < Cotswold) for 150, with a further 278 selling at 665. Mount Vulcan, Ltd., sold 547 at 645, and sales at 63s were made by J. F. Lochhead (Mont Serrat) for 230, D and R. D. Gould (Mount Cass) for 360. and W. Elliot and Son (Liddiebank) for 207. G. Gibb (Glen Clova). R. C. Overton, and H. Fitzsimmons were also in sales at 61s. Mr Stewart sold another 300 at 50s, and Jand S. McLean realised 50s for 107 Four and five-year-old ewes sold up to 56s paid for a truck from R. D. Sloss (Valley View) and the balance of 293 sold at 555. Corriedale ewe lambs from Watson and Topp, Ltd.
