The Secretary of State (Mr Ruak) when buying • home In Washington recently, refu*ed to sign a covenant restricting negroes "or any person of the Semitic race” from the area, it was disclosed toThe Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs (Mr Roger Tubby) said: "He feels strongly on such matter* He takes exception to any kind of restriction based on race Or creed." Mr Rusk was reported to have bought the four-bed-rpomed home for 58.000 dollars. There was no comment from the builders responsible for developing the area and selling the bouse to Mr Rusk. The company customarily requires that buyers sign the covenant barring oecupancy of any homes*in the development to negroes "or any person of the Semitic race, blood or origin” including "Jews. Hebrews, Persians , and Syrians.” It also requires that new purchaser* must designate the firm as agent* for resale.
