Rifle Shooting Australians Prominent At Trentham Meeting

(New Zealand Preu Association)

TRENTHAM CAMP, Feb. 20. It was Australia's day at Trentham today. A South Australian rifleman, D. C. Hancock, beat the notoriously tricky winds and carried off the Zealandia Belt with the highest aggregate in the Wellington Rifle Association’s one-day meeting. Second was another Australian, R. Laing, of the New South Wales Rail and Tram Institute Club, one point behind. Hancock, who represented ’ his country at Bisley last year, scored 191 over four ranges, 10 points more than last year's winning score, to become the first overseas competitor to win the trophy. Third was a former New Zealand champion. F. J. Jeune (Gisborne), with 188. R. Grimwood (Petone) took the B grade trophy with 182. and G. A- Blackett (Upper Hutt), shooting with an injured left hand, took the C grade with 180. Laing beat Hancock and Jeune to take the long-range aggregate with 97, by two points, and the two Australians tied for the R. E. Whiteman Challenge Cup. They will shoot off later in the week. An unofficial member of the ' Australian team, A Hammond, was in the shoot-off for the short-range aggregate, but he was beaten by F. J. Beattie (Upper Hutt), a B grade shooter, who also beat a third challenger, R. E. Taylor (Christchurch). Erratic Winds Trentham's fishtail winds tested the shooters. The flags marking the changes were ’ never the same for seconds at a time, and many riflemen i found their shots being carried ' off centre by sudden gusts. The only possible 50’s, five 1 of them, were scored on the ' short range in the first shoot of the day, and most of the top shooters were scoring in the middle and high 40’s, though not a few of them were inconsistent On the whole the Australian representatives did as well as the New Zealanders on what is accepted as one of the most difficult ranges in the world, and most collected some prize-money. The New Zealanders will certainly have to look to their laurels when the National Rifle Associations' meeting, for which today’s match is generally considered a curtain-raiser, opens tomorrow morning.
