MR H. B. LUSK

Teacher, writer, nature lover, golfer and cricketer, Mr Harold Butler Lusk who had a part in moulding the character of thousands of men throughout New Zealand, died in Auckland recently at the age of 84. Headmaster of King's College, Otahuhu, from 1943 to 1947, master at King’s College from 1920 to 1942 and before that a master at Christ’s College, for 14 years, Mr Lusk played a big part In the teaching profession of the two cities. As a golfer he won the New Zealand amateur championship in 1910, the Auckland provincial championship four times between 1921 and 1928, and the Auckland club championship seven times between 1920 and 1936. A* a cricketer he played for Auckland, Canterbury and New Zealand (two tests against Australia in 1910). He first played cricket for Auckland 'in 1900. Bom in Sydney in 1877 and educated at Sydney Church of England Grammar School and Sydney High School, Mr Lusk came to New Zealand and attended Auckland University where he graduated master of arts and bachelor of laws. Six years later he took up an appointment at Christ's College and while a master there played cricket for New Zealand and won the amateur golf championship. While at Christ’s College he went to England for two years on exchange and taught at Rugby School. In 1920 he took up his appointment at King’s College, specialising in English and mathematics. • He continued to play competitive golf and as well as his victories on the course he was captain of the Auckland club for seven years and president for four years. He was later made a life member. He was elected president of the New Zealand Golf Association for the year 1958. As a writer he wrote editorials for "New Zealand Golf Illustrated” for 30 years.
