WASHINGTON, February 9 The unemployment situation in the United States was “the worst since early World War H," a Labour Department spokesman said today. An additional 25 major industrial centres in the United States were now listed as areas of substantial unemployment Some areas had an unemployment rate of more than 12 per cent Mr Seymour Wolfbein, the Labour Department’s manpower expert, said that if only seasonal pick-ups occurred and there was no basic improvement in the economy in the next few months, the number of unemployed would remain at five million persons into the coming summer. Unemployment in January rose by about 850,000 to 5385,000, a post-war record for the month.
