Report Before Council

■The New Zealand Rugby Union last year spent £7449 in excess of its revenue, according to the balance-sheet placed before today’s meeting of the council of the union.
The cost of the South African tour. £9782. was already covered by a reserve of £lO.OOO established in 1956. Otherwise the loss would have been £174130. The main item of expenditure was £6338 on the Maori tour of Tonga. Loans to unions last year totalled £129.461. The All Black trials showed a profit of £lOOO, but the Maori match for the Prince of Wales Cup cost £798. The accounts balance at £231 598. The match between the New Zealand touring team and The Rest returned a profit of £2480. and the North-South match £512.
