87.6 Degrees In City

The second highest temperature so far this February was recorded at Harewood yesterday. About 4 p.m. 87.8 degrees was reached.

A light easterly wind blew until about 3 p.m., when it backed to the north-west Temperatures built up gradually during the day. and remained fairly high in the evening. At 8 am., 60 degrees was recorded, at 10 a.m. 72 degrees, at noon 76 degrees, at 2 p.m. 83 degrees, at 4 p.m. the highest point of 87.6 degrees. at 5 p.m. a slight drop to 85 degrees, at 6 p.m., 83 degrees, and at 8 p.m. 75 degrees.

The humidity was low. At the peak of the temperature. 27 per cent, was recorded. By 8 p.m., it had risen to 45 per cent

Yesterday’s highest temperature was only .5 degrees less than that recorded on February 1, when similar conditions prevailed. The temperature on that day was 75 degrees at 9 p.m. Temperatures generally throughout Canterbury were high. At Ashburton, 92 degrees was recorded, and at Rangiora 90 degrees. The following maximum temperatures throughout the South Canterbury district were reported:—Geraldine, 90 degrees in mid-afternoon; Timaru, 89.6 degrees at 4.30 p.m.; Temuka, 88.9 degrees at 5 p.m.; Waimate, 88 at 5 p.m.

Inland, cooler weather was experienced, according to reports. Fairlie’s maximum was about 85 degrees, and at Lake Tekapo the reading was 78 degrees.
