Sportsman’s Notebook REGATTA AT LAKE FORSYTH CANCELLED

Rapid growth of weed at Lake Forsyth, caused by the warm weather over the last few days, has led io the cancellation of the speedboat regatta which was to have been held on Sunday by the New Brighton Power Boat Club. Members of the club inspected the lake and came to the decision that racing would be virtually impossible. The weed, which at present gives the impression of a green lawn in parts of the lake, chokes the water scoops and the propellers of the boats. Eleven outboards stalled in a race about two years ago when the lake was in a similar condition.

The club hopes to hold a regatta at Kairaki next month and possibly one at Lakeside, also during March.

A club day will be held at Pleasant Point (South Brighton) tomorrow, and the emphasis will be on practice for forthcoming championship regattas in the South Island during the next month. On February 18 and 19 a regatta will be run at Invercargill, followed a week later by another at Lake Waihola. south of Dunedin. The South Island cubic inch V-bottom championships will be decided at the Waihao Forks. Waimate. on March 4 and 5. and on March 11 and 12 there will be a regatta at the Wairau river, Marlborough. The New Brighton Power Boat Club will be represented at all these regattas which means that for some drivers the next month will be a busy one. * * •

Power Catamaran Much interest will be taken in the Christchurch Water Sports Club's regatta at Kairaki on February 19 in the appearance of a revolutionary power - driven catamaran. Driven by one of the world's most powerful outboard motors the boat is expected to reach speeds of up to 45 miles an hour. A similar motor holds the world outboard speed record of 123 miles an hour. Neither a power catamaran nor this type of motor have been seen in the South Island before.
