SIXTH HEAT
Of £18M; One mite and a quarter. 1000 DAMIAN (1) It (F. Smith). Was a most disappointing eighth in the Second Heat on Wednesday, after showing no dash in the straight. Damian had worked well before coming south and he could do better here.
0000 FOURTH EDITION (6) It (R. Young), Finished fairly well from the middle of the field for fifth in the First Heat on the opening day. Has some sound sprinting efforts to his credit.
0004 GUARD’S BRIGADE (8) It (W. R. Butt). Not starting.
0020 HIGHLAND HEATH (4) It (J. D. Litten). Handy enough to the straight, but made no impression in the run home and finished \ seventh.
0 LAST COMMAND (N.S.W.) (2) It (A. B. Wilson). Covered extra ground in the middle stages of his race on Wednesday, but was beaten a long way from home. No appeal.
0300 QUEEN NGAIO (9) It (F. E. Newfield). Paced a sound race for fifth in her heat on Wednesday after having every chance. Will find the opposition strong in this field.
4 REDWIN (N.S.W.) (5) It (P. J. Hall). Impressed most of the Australian horses in the three heats on Wednesday. Came from the rear at the five furlongs and covered extra ground, finishing fourth, little more than a length from Diamond Hanover. 1100 SAMANTHA (10) It (G. B. Noble). Badly
placed on the inside most of,the way after a slow beginning. Finished solidly once clear and was seventh, an effort on which she could improve considerably in this heat
0 TAXI BOY (W.A.) (7) It (P Coulson). Came through his race on Wednesday in fine style. Showed speed until a furlong and a half from the finish. Should be a better horse tomorrow.
0400 VAN RUSH (3) It (J. W. Smolensk!). Broke at the start and was well back most of the way in his heat on Wednesday, making up a little ground for eighth. Would be preferred over a longer distance.
4000 CANYON (1) 12 (B. J. Forrester). Sore and a doubtful starter.
0201 ROBERT DILLON (2) 12 (F. G. Holmes). Won so well on Wednesday that he must be given a great chance of repeating that effort. Has never looked better.
1112 SMOKEAWAY (3) 12 (D. G. Jones). Looked in need of the race he had when second to Teryman. Should be a better horse and must be given a chance.
2112 FALSE STEP (1) 30 (C. C. Devine). Sure to be improved after his race on Wednesday and in this field he must be given a great chance of success. Won the N.Z. Free-for-all most decisively last November and handicap mark does not look prohibitive.
