A-TESTS IN SAHARA
French Ban Reported
(Rec. 10 p.m.) I.AGOS, Feb. 9. The Foreign Minister of Senegal, Mr Doudou Thiam, said yesterday he understood the French Government had decided not to carry out any more atomic tests in the Sahara, reported American Associated Press. Asked if he had a firm assurance from the French Government that further atomic tests in the Sahara would not take place, Mr Thiam said he “could not divulge diplomatic secrets.” But he said that his information came from French Government sources. "I am simply passing on the information I have,” he said, "without definitely divulging the source.” French atomic tests in the Sahara have been strongly criticised by several independent Africa States. After the second test early last year, Ghana temporarily froze French assets and last month Nigeria expelled the French Ambassador in Lagos and his staff, giving them only 48 hours to quit the country.
