ARMY CADET CLASS
General Presents Sword (Army Information Service] The 1961 Regular Force cadet school class has been named after Major-General Sir Keith Stewart, who presented his cavalry sword as a memento of the occasion. It has been traditional, since the initial intake of cadets in 1948, of naming each entry after a prominent New Zealand soldier. General Stewart graduated from Royal Military College. Duntroon, in 1916 and served in the First World War. He held various staff appointments in New Zealand and in 1949 proceeded overseas as general staff officer of the 2nd New Zealand Division. In 1945 he went to Japan with the New Zealand section of the British Commonwealth Force, which he commanded till 1946. In 1949 he was appointed Chief of the General Staff and in 1951 he was appointed to command the New Zealand Division. These appointments he held until 1952 when he was transferred to the reserve of officers.
