DEPOSITS IN P.O.S.B.

Business On Increase

The number of deposits in Post Office Savings Bank Accounts in the Christchurch district last year was more than 86,000 higher than in 1959. The figure for 1960 was 1,002,131. The withdrawal figures for the district are not yet available, but the withdrawals from the Hereford street branch rose by 19,517 to 448,600. Deposits in thrift club, investment deposit, and ordinary savings bank accounts all rose over the year, while deposits in school savings bank and home layby accounts fell slightly. Withdrawals from Hereford street showed a similar pattern, except that there was an increased number of home layby account withdrawals. Deposit figures include 60.000 to 70,000 family benefit lodgments. National Savings deposits at Hereford street fell sharply from more than 24,000 in 1959 to less than 20,000 last year, the difference probably being due. to an increased emphasis on investment deposits. National Savings withdrawals, however, fell only slightly, from 10.781 to 10.463.

Postal notes paid at the Chief Post Office rose by more than 25.000 to 227,371.
