LADY SLATTERY ARRIVING
Visit To City Next Month
Lady Slattery, the wife of Sir Matthew Slattery, chairman of 8.0.A.C., is looking forward to her visit to Christchurch early next month. She loves to meet new people in their home setting, and enjoys the opportunity to taste the national dishes of the countries she visits. Born in Trinidad, where her father. Colonel G. D. Swain, was Inspector-General of Police, Lady Slattery was educated in England at Our Lady’s Priory at Haywards Heath, Sussex. While living at Hove, Sussex, with her parents (now retired) Lady Slattery met and married her husband, who was then in the Royal Navy. They have two married sons and one daughter. Both sons —Peter, a barrister, and David, a doctor—have two children.
Micaela, Lady Slattery’s daughter, who is 21-years-old, is working with a publishing firm in the United Kingdom. She plans to go to New York very soon to embark on a career in advertising. In between social engagements, Lady Slattery finds time for her main interests, which include being with her grandchildren, and tending the garden of her home at Harvey’s Farm, Warninglid, Sussex.
Fond of animals and outdoor life, she was until recently district commissioner of the Surrey Union branch of the Pony Club. Sir Matthew and Lady Slattery divide their time between their home at Warninglid and London. In town Lady Slattery enjoys entertaining and visits to art galleries, concerts, the ballet and the theatfh.
