Auckland Title Meeting
(N.Z, Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 24. The Auckland lawn tennis championships began at Stanley street today, the most absorbing match being tht first round of the men’s singles between R. N Hawkes (Wellington), the third seed, and L. Hook, a Franklin player only one year out of junior ranks, who belongs to the country club of Pukekawa. Tall and sturdy. Hook was not in the least awed by Hawke’s reputation, and helped by a spate of errors by Hawkes took the first set, 6-4. Later, however, the match slipped from his grasp. The matches were played In glorious conditions, with the courts In first-class condition. Results:—
