LAWN TENNISThree Junior Titles To Waikato
(New Zealand Press Association)
WANGANUI. Jan. 24. Three Waikato players, I. Crookenden, P. Thomson, and Elizabeth Terry, and an Auckland player. Miss E. Green, emerged as the outstanding competitors in the New Zealand junior lawn tennis championships, which ended at Wanganui today.
Waikato won for the first time the Slazenger Cup for most points gained by an association in the finals. It had, however, once previously shared the trophy with Auckland. For the first time also this season, Waikato won the Slazenger Shield boys’ teams’ competition. In confirming his position as the country’s top junior boy, Crookenden had too much controlled power as well as deception for J. Souter (Wellington). The Waikato lefthander won the final of the under-19 singles decisively, 6-3, 6-3. Crookenden and Souter later won the boys’ I doubles.
Thomson became the only competitor to claim three titles. He outclassed a nervous D. Simmonds in the final of the boys’ under-17 singles and later paired with G. Jefferson (Waikato) to win the boys’ doubles.
Miss Terry won the girls’ under-17 title for the second successive year. After dropping the first set to Miss E. Cavaye (Hutt Valley), Miss Terry took the second set at 6-4 and the deciding set at 6-0.
Miss Terry’s hopes of gaining three titles were dispelled when Misses Cavaye and L. Smith (Auckland) beat her and Miss H. Kidd in straight sets in the girls’ doubles. Miss Green gave a magnificent display to beat Miss Anne Smith (Auckland) 6-4, 6-0 in the final of the girls' singles under 19. Fine but cold weather prevailed for the final day. Results•
