NEW LAKE ON WAIKATO

Ohakuri Power Scheme (N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, January 17. The forming of Lake Ohakuri which begins tomorrow will be an unspectacular affair. A button will be pushed, the heavy gate of the diversion tunnel will slowly fall, and the waters of the Waikato river will begin to bank up behind the dam to a depth of 40 feet in the first 12 hours.

The new lake’s pent-up energy, when it is finally formed two weeks later, will send the two turbines in the new powerhouse at the dam site spinning, feeding another 56.000 kilowatts into the North Island power supply. Four power units are planned. The control of the Waikato river, and thus the North Island hydro-electric power supply usually operated through the Taupo control gates, will be in the hands of the Ohakuri engineers for the next fortnight.
