BOWLS TWO-DAY TOURNAMENT AT NEW BRIGHTON

As part of the New Brighton Centennial celebrations the New Brighton Bowling Club conducted a two-day tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The eight rinks accommodating 16 fours were used and the green was running very fast and true. Three games to a time limit were played each day and where two fours drew no extra heads were played. Only one four came through unbeaten, this being the United combination of K. Donaldson. K. Sams, Ponsford, V. V. Gallagher. Ponsford, a visitor from Dunedin, skipped the four to success.

The Sydenham four, W. Bowden, D. Barron, H. Deavoll, A. Ij. Smith were the runners-up with only one loss. Here again the skip stood down in favour of another player when Deavoll took over the role for all games. At the conclusion of the tournament the president of the New Brighton club, Mr F. Mitchell, said that this was the first occasion that the New Brighton Club had run a two-day tournament and he felt that as it had been such a success it should be carried on each year.
