OBSERVERS IN ANTARCTIC
Seven Americans Named Seven American observers have been selected to spend a season at the Antarctic bases of foreign countries. With the Argentinian expedition in the Weddell Sea and Grahamland areas will be a historian, Dr. H. M. Dater. Mr J. R. Hays, a geographer with the United States Air Force will leave Melbourne next week in the Thala Dan for the Australian station at Mawson and the Russian station at Mirny. Dr. R. B. Black, a retired rearadmiral and a member of three previous American Antarctic expeditions will be an observer at the Belgian station Queen Maud Land. He will join the Belgian party in Cape Town and sail aboard the Erika Dan.
The observer with the French parties on the Adelie Coast and Dumont D'Urville will be Captain W. W. Watkins, polar test officer of the Army’s polar environmental test and research team. Mr W. L. Boxell. a marine navigation, specialist with the United States Hydrographic Office, will join the Japanese ship Soya at Cape Town for the trip to Showa Station, in Queen Maud Land. His duties with the hydrographic office have been involved with navigational problems in, both polar regions of the world. An oceanographer. Lieutenant R. M. O’Hagan joined the South African party in Cape Town last month. He travelled on board the Polarhav to Sanae, the South African station in Queen Maud Land. With the United Kingdom expedition will be Mr J. W. Finklang, a geodesist from the United States Air Force. He will travel in the Kista Dan and five other British ships on their re-supply missions to nine stations in Grahamland.
