RACING WASHDYKE DOUBLE TODAY

Quick-Time—Vitamise Selected (From Our Own Keporttr) TIMARU, December 30. Quick Time and Vitamise, which are both Riccarton-trained newcomers at the meeting, might be successful in the respective legs of the double at Washdyke tomorrow. The double will be run on the Timaru Gup and the Rangitata Handicap on the second day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting. Quick Time, which was left at Wingatui after competing in the Dunedin Cup last Monday, was brought to Washdyke yesterday. He seems to have thrived during the week and indicated that he would be at a high peak of fitness for tomorrow’s contest when he was exercised on the plough at Washdyke this morning.

Quick Time will be ridden by the Wingatui horseman, R. J. Skelton, who will be attempting to win the Timaru Cup for the fourth time. Skelton’s earlier winning mounts in the race were Ngapunawai (1953), Nuclear (1956) and Prince Filou a year later.

Quick Time is second in the handicap. He has 7-8. 61b less than the top-weight. Gay Defoe, which is expected to be his strongest rival. Gay Defoe did not come up to expectations in the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap last Tuesday—his first run since his win in the Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton last month —but he will be competing on his home track tomorrow and is certain to have solid backing.

Thumper, a stablemate of Quick Time, and Personify, which is trained at Waimate by P. H. R. Andrews, who was represented yesterday by the Christmas Handicap winner, Jesse Owens, are the only last start winners in the field. Thumper won the Hororata Cup in a tight finish with McCool and Gaytana the last time he raced and -Personify graduated to open company with an impressive victory against the hack milers at Ashburton in November, On firm ground. Hand Over, a member of C. G. Humphries’ Riccarton stable, might have stronger support. She runs her races out in the style of a true stayer and one of her best runs should get her into one of the contending positions at the end of a distance which is only 70 yards short of a mile and a-half. Vitamise, runner-up to Page Boy in the record-run Members’ Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting the last time he raced, is expected to take beating in the Rangitata Handicap, the second leg of the double. Ha showed race winning fitness for this test when he broke 60sec for five furlongs in training on the plough at Riccarton last Saturday. Keep Time One of his companions in that gallop was Keep Time, the Rangitata Handicap top-weight. The Members’ Handicap at Riccarton was also Keep Time’s latest race. He finished fourth with a strong run which was impeded by fallen horses at the top of the straight. However, at six furlongs he will probably have to work hard for victory under 9-0. Keep Time has to concede Vitamise 181 b and Gold View, which is expected to represent the Orari stable of H. L. Pratt with distinction, 71b. Gold View will be trying for her third successive victory. She out-ran the open sprinters in the Publicans’ Handicap at Wingatui last Saturday and ran the six furlongs in race record time. She has gone up 9 lb for that success but even that is unlikely to dim her brilliance. A start for Gaytana, runner-up to Jesse Owens in the Christmas Handicap yesterday, is not certain. Her Riccarton trainer, R. W. Bromby, said this morning he would prefer to reserve her for the Waikouaiti Cup on Monday, but he would have to confer with her owner, Mr G. N. Paterson, before a final decision was made. Light-weight

The most solidly-backed lightweight will probably be the Washdyke filly, Flying Time. Her holiday campaign began in the open sprint at Wingatui last Tuesday. She finished fourth but would have been almost certain to have paid a dividend had she not run into trouble early in the race and made her run from the tail of the field on the home turn. Several newcomers to the meeting in the minor events could reduce the value of first day form.

Three fresh Riccarton-trained horses which are expected to shape well in their engagements are Puff, a two-year-old Knight’s Romance filly which J. C. Tomkinson trains for Mr D. W. J. Gould, honorary treasurer of the Canterbury Jockey Club, and Gay Filou and Gabelle, both last start winners at Wingatui. Unless there is rain—and at present that seems unlikely—Ballochburn is unlikely to start in the Temuka Handicap.

The forecast for tomorrow is for mainly fair weather and the track should again be hard and fast.
