DUNEDIN, December 30. The Walkouaiti Cup will be the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Walkouaiti Racing Club’s meeting on Monday. Valaris is a likely favourite. The second leg will be the Toomey Memorial Handicap. The topweight. Roman Maid, makes most appeal. Roman Maid won this race last year with 7-8. This time she has 8-9, but in between she has rpn some good races, and her latest track work will bring her strong support on Monday. Selections:—

SPARKLER BACK IN WORK

The former New Zealand stayer, Sparkler, is being prepared for the rich Australian autumn handicaps by the Flemington trainer, P. Burke. Sparkler was trained at Randwick by T. J. Smith last spring, but during the Melbourne Cup carnival, the owners transferred the gelding to Burke. According to the Melbourne “Age,” Sparkler was scratched from the Melbourne Cup and sent for a spell on Burke’s recommendation.

The paper said Sparkler appeared to have developed signs of suspensory trouble, but Burke said the gelding had come back to the stable in excellent condition.

If Sparkler reproduces his New Zealand form, he would rank with the best stayers in Australia, the paper said.
