RACE WITH “SCALP”
Hillary Hastens To Sherpas (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, December 30. Sir Edmund Hillary’s Sherpas stand to lose all their possessions and property unless the New Zealand explorer can cut more than two weeks off the journey to Khumjung. The Sherpas put up their property to guarantee the safety of Sir Edmund Hillary’s yeti scalp, the “Daily Mail” reported. He promised to return it by January 5, and has allowed himself only six days for the trek from Katmandu to Khumjung, a journey which normally takes three weeks. Sir Edmund Hillary left London for Katmandu by air yesterday. The newspaper reported that scientists in Chicago, Paris, and London were agreed that the scalp was not the scalp of an abominable snowman, but was an imitation made from the skin of a goat-like antelope. It is believed to be at least 300 years old and there is no question of its having been faked to deceive modern explorers.
