AWARDS FOR SERVICE
N.Z. Soldiers In Malaya (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 30. The Governor-General (Lord Cobham) has announced that the Queen has been pleased to approve the following awards to members of the 2nd Battalion, the New Zealand Regiment, for service in Malaya:— Member of the Order of the British Empire (Military Division) Major Leslie Watson Wright, Royal Regiment of New Zealand. Major Francis Anness Bishop, Royal New Zealand Army Ordnance Corps. British Empire Medal (Military Division) Sergeant Douglas lan Mackintosh, the New Zealand Regiment. Mention in Despatches Lieutenant Alan Russell Fraser, the New Zealand Regiment. Sergeant David William Joseph Faulkner, the New Zealand Regiment. Private, Temporary LanceCorporal Lyall James Ferguson, the New Zealand Regiment. Major Wright, who graduated from Duntroon at the end of 1942. served with the 2nd N.Z.E.F. in the artillery and is at present second in command of the 2nd Battalion in Malava. The award to Major Bishop, of Mangaroa, is for services as deputy assistant quartermastergeneral of the 17th Gurkha Division. Sergeant Mackintosh served with the Special Air Service Squadron in Malaya ,and joined the 2nd Battalion in 1959. For four months he commanded a platoon on operations in the absence of an officer. Lieutenant Fraser won the confidence of the aborigines with the result that an aborigine group led by a listed terrorist surrendered. Sergeant Faulkner commanded his platoon during the prolonged absence of his platoon commander.
