MANUSCRIPTS OF COOK
Britain To Allow Export (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, December 29. The Government will not withhold a licence for the export of the manuscripts of the log books of Captain Cook’s voyages, the “Daily Telegraph” said today. The diaries were sold at Christie’s, London, for £53,000 earlier this month, to an American collector. The Government was told that their sale abroad would not be a national loss as they were transcripts of original documents. The originals of other documents, providing a full record of Cook’s voyages, were already held in fengland.
“Australia and New Zealand, once thought to be a likely destination, are not interested in buying at anything like the price paid in London," said the paper.
